NEW DELHI: A Uzbek national was held at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday after foreign currency worth around Rs 2.5 crore, concealed in the packs of new bedsheets, was detected in his bag.
Around 2.30 pm, CISF personnel deployed for pre-embarkation security checks of the International Security Hold Area of Terminal 3, noticed doubtful images of concealment of currency notes in a bag, which was referred for physical checking, and the passenger was stopped. “On thorough physical checking, it was noticed that new packed bedsheets were there in the bag. On strong suspicion, the bedsheets were opened and $3,07,500 (worth Rs 2.52 crore) wrapped in plastic cover and ingeniously concealed inside the bedsheets were found,” said an official.
The official added that the currency and the cloth are made of organic material, so it was difficult to differentiate between the two during X-BIS screening. “However, due to the alertness of sub-inspector Aasish Singh of CISF, the huge amount of foreign currency was detected,” said the official.
The passenger was supposed to travel from Delhi to Dubai.
